About Mary Sues.. (Canon examples)

It appears that a couple writers find themselves unsure of whether they've created a Mary Sue, or whether they are interacting with one and should give constructive criticism.
First of all, let me recommend a website with a definition of what a Mary Sue/Gary Stu is: Click.
Perhaps it's not too apparent, but for an OC or FC being a Mary Sue has nothing to do with being overpowered. An overpowered character can be no Sue while having no apparent weaknesses or limits to their given powers.
What a Sue does, however, is break any logic that would have applied otherwise to adjust them. I will not describe any Sue OCs I've come across, but instead evaluate on canon characters, which have Sue traits. For obvious reasons.
Let's begin with an all-time favourite for a lot of us: Elsa from Frozen.
While the movie and all issues pressed onto the involved characters revolve around Elsa's powers, the powers of her are never properly explained. Most of all, there is absolutely no limit set to the duration, power and growth rate of her ability. Thus stressing the fact that she may be overpowered. This, however, does not qualify her as a Sue yet.
What does is the end of the movie. Once Elsa shows herself to her people nobody is scared of her any longer despite the propaganda of Prince Hans. As the definition states 'sensing her goodness'. Now, this is just a typical thing Disney does. The movie ends and everyone who is intended to gets along just fine. In the further progression of Frozen however this does qualify Elsa as a Sue, since she does not have to prove her good intentions to anyone to earn their trust. Let alone as their leader. At this point, yes she has to earn it, because nobody actually knew her properly until recently. Save for the times when she still went outside together with her parents. Chances are she still didn't interact a lot with the citiziens and/or they can't remember at this point. A realistic turn of events would have been for Anna to gradually take over the role as a queen, since people would be able to identify with her, rather than with Elsa. Who quarantees that another outbreak of Elsa like this will not happen again if she faces hardship? They have literally no logical reason to trust her.
What still speaks for her, or against her being a Sue though, is that Hans was able to cause her hardship and nearly killed her if it weren't for Anna saving her. Thus making her enemies a real threat for her.
This puts a lot of Disney princesses in line for more or less apparent Sue traits. A big issue is that the alignment of the involved crowds - citiziens, the other parties is often not explained.
In one case the opposite would apply. Belle from Beauty and the Beast faces a village which offensively doesn't approve of her traits. Hardly any of them thinks differently, save for a bookstore keeper.
With this in mind, we could question a lot of arrivals of canon characters in their respective kingdoms. Unless those citiziens had a similiar leader to Gaston who told them what to believe - did they have a different one who announced they should all trust and love the canon character(s)? Or did they have minds of their own and the ones who didn't approve just remained modest and didn't interfere? Unlikely.
This lets me question the nature of my favorite FC and his partner in crime - Rapunzel and Flynn/Eugene from Tangled
Nobody seems to recall who Rapunzel is upon her arrival despite her relatively unique looks - you will see nearly no other blondes among the citiziens. Or at least I didn't see any, blame it on my eyes. Fair enough until there. That they spontaneously decide to celebrate together with her could be blamed on their nature. Perhaps Coronians like to sing and dance out of nowhere. So far so legit.
What causes the image to creak is the attendance of Flynn. Anyone would have been able to see that there were wanted posters of him around town, as well as the guards patroling and obviously still on and about to find him. What did they tell their citiziens? As far as we know the King and Queen are beloved by their people, would their subjects not be concerned about the theft of the tiara of their, possibly also beloved, lost princess? One could suggest that the same person who stole the crown was also the culprit who stole the baby 18 years ago. There would be no way to prove that either, but that's how propaganda and fury works.
With this in mind the guards have two options - tell the citiziens about it, tell them to meet safety cautions and to keep an eye out for the culprit. The guard captain doesn't strike me as a naive person, so he too would assume that the criminal may return to the scene of crime. And even if the guards wanted to cover up their foolish mistake, the King and Queen wouldn't leave their subjects in the dark like that.
In other words: This doesn't make any sense. Flynn is realistic to the point where everyone hates his guts for either betraying them or being what he is: a thief. Once they arrive at Corona it becomes unrealistic once he quits to hide. The place isn't too big for a message like this not to spread over night.
Even at the end of the movie while Rapunzel inherits the respect originally aimed at her parents, Flynn/Eugene would face any mistrust there may be pend up for very justified reasons. The King and Queen would have thought the same way by any means. After all, they did approve of him getting hanged for his crimes.
So in this case, that makes Flynn/Eugene a suspect for being a Sue for the reactions he does and doesn't elicit, which have no reasonable background. As a liar and criminal whose first and only crime wasn't to steal Rapunzel's tiara there would be no reason why her parents, or the rest of the subjects would have approved of him running around out of jail. Regardless of what Rapunzel may have wanted. Her parents would have become well aware of her lack of education and naivete after a couple, maybe just one conversation. Thus granting her absolutely no say in this matter. For them their decisions are directly connected to the future of their kingdom and the well being, as well as rehab of Rapunzel. Why entrust someone like Flynn with it and put him at the side of their suggestible daughter?
Realistically viewed, Flynn would have gotten caught as soon as he blew his cover at the market place. Along with Rapunzel who would have been suspected to be his partner in crime for traveling together with him. Unless the queen met her personally and confirmed their resemblance. We know that, as far as the movie goes, Flynn didn't get to see the royal couple either. So it's probably save to assume that this would have never happened.
Maybe this cleared the confusion about Mary Sues up a little. I got a little lost in writing it as I was very inspired and I could have gone even more into detail, but I don't think I should've. If you have any questions go ahead.

The website selling everything it finds via third-party search engines is gone.
You've probably heard of it, maybe not. I find it highly offensive to even find my poor attempts of drawing stuff on there for sale at 6 dollars a piece.
Do not visit this website with scripts enabled and outside of a save environment. It steals your art through usage of third-party engines and embedding it into their own website, offering them all as prints, which is pretty lame.
Storing all art until it's down, then this journal will be deleted too. You might also like to read the following journal for further information:

There you can not only enjoy RPing with any active character of your choice, but also join us on chat! Everyone you are going to meet is more or less a big Disney fan.
Aside from RPing through comments and journals you will also find discussions of character development beyond the movie and much more, which has come to light and needs to be settled one way or another. For instance we recently researched, whether some of our characters could even engage in Halloween festives, due to their timelines, or how it was to be celebrated properly. Also trivial questions such as if they already had Pizza in Germany in the 1800s come to mind, as the RP just keeps going.
